Training a young dog requires patience, consistency, and a good sense of humor. Puppies are naturally energetic and curious, which can make even simple commands a challenge to follow. Still, those early learning moments are often the most entertaining for owners.

A video shared on Instagram by @itsmisterritz shows a Golden Retriever puppy in the middle of a training session with his owner. The clip begins with the puppy sitting on the floor, looking up attentively. Meanwhile, his tail wags with excitement as he waits for the next instruction.
His owner starts with a simple command: “stay.” The puppy listens and remains seated, although his body language suggests he is bursting with energy. Just as it seems like he might jump, the owner calmly repeats the command, reinforcing the need for patience.
The puppy manages to hold his position for a few seconds longer, but his excitement gradually takes over. On the next repetition of “stay,” he can no longer contain himself. In a sudden burst, he hops forward toward his owner, clearly eager to engage and perhaps show off what he’s learned.
The unexpected hop catches the owner slightly off guard. Despite his impatience, the puppy quickly responds when given another command. When told to “sit,” he immediately obeys, returning to position as if to make up for his earlier enthusiasm. The clip ends on a positive note, with the owner praising him warmly and calling him a “good boy.”
If you’re trying to teach your dog to jump on command, it helps to start with basic obedience skills like “sit” and “stay.” Once your dog is comfortable, introduce a clear cue, such as “jump,” while encouraging the movement with a treat or toy. Timing is equally important. You’ll want to reward the action immediately so your dog associates the command with the behavior. Most of all, keep sessions short to maintain focus, and avoid over-repeating commands if your dog becomes restless.
