The German Shorthaired Pointer in the video makes his first move by taking the broccoli into his mouth from the kitchen counter, and then immediately drops it onto the floor. He freezes for a moment and stares at it. Eventually, the puppy steps back with real suspicion, like the broccoli might attack him at any moment. Another on-screen caption reads, “Not sure…close inspection,” and that is exactly what is happening.
He finally comes closer to the floret, albeit still unsure, and lowers his head to sniff, eventually giving it a little taste. After a few more seconds of possibly fighting internally, Hank finally decides to eat it, as the video’s last on-screen text notes, “Ok I’ll try I guess.” In the video’s caption, the German Shorthaired Pointer’s owner simply wrote, “Hank tries broccoli for the first time.”
Hank is cautious about trying new food, and so are many dogs. They often test unfamiliar things with a sniff and by figuring out texture and taste before trying them. Broccoli can smell strong and taste slightly bitter, so it makes sense that the dog needed a moment before he agreed to a bite.
Viewers loved Hank’s back-and-forth with the broccoli floret. One person joked, “That’s my reaction every time!?,” while another noted, “Broccoli is tree of doom to Hank,” and several others thought their dogs looked like Hank, with comments like, “I thought this was my dog for a second.
